Question:
I want to create a "Swim-Lane" chart. How do I get started?
|
Answer:

Yes. The best approach is to bring the field in as a column and then use a "column ValueSet" (type 3) to graph the values across the timeline.
- Bring the Microsoft Project field into your Milestones schedule. See: Add a field from Microsoft Project
- Set up the ValueSet (as a type 2 ValueSet.) (Tools | Set Up ValueSets) See: Create and format ValueSets
- Add the ValueSet to a DataGraph. (Tools | Set Up DataGraphs) See: Create and change DataGraphs
Answer:
There are a couple ways to make swimlane schedules in Milestones.
Method # 1: Shade blocks of rows and remove grid lines:
-
Using the (the toolbox arrow tool), click once on the first task row to be colored.
-
Hold down the Shift key and left-click once on the last task row to be colored that is in the same group.
-
The toolbar will change to Current Object: Task Row. On the toolbar, choose More Task Row Options and then Gridline/Shade.
-
Click the Shading tab.
-
Apply New Selections to all three sections.
-
Under Left Columns, Shade the task row.
-
Select a Shade Color, and other options for shading.
-
Click OK.
Method # 1: Resize individual rows and place symbols and bars with different vertical positions
-
First, make sure the ability to adjust the height is "turned on": On the Tools tab, choose Edit.
-
Allow task row Height Adjustments.
-
Also, make sure the schedule has a column. If it doesn't insert one to use while editing the schedule.
-
Move the cursor to the lower edge of the task row to be adjusted.
-
The cursor will change to an up/down arrow shape.
-

-
Click and drag the row's lower horizontal grid line (or line guide), then change the row to the new height.
-
After setting up all the rows, see this article about adding symbols on multiple levels.
