WBS SmartColumn

WBS stands for Work Breakdown Structure. WBS Numbering is used in conjunction with outlining. Once a schedule has been outlined, a column can be set up as a WBS SmartColumn. Milestones Professional will then automatically fill in the WBS numbers which correspond to the outline levels.

Add a WBS SmartColumn to the schedule:

  1. Choose Insert | Rows, Columns | New Column | WBS Number.

  2. The default Starting WBS Number is 1. Enter another starting number if the project is a sub-set of a large project's WBS system.

  3.  Suppress display of First Level WBS Number to prevent Milestones from displaying a WBS number on the first level of tasks.

  4. Leave the default display as all numbers or select letters for various outline levels.

Click once on the column heading to change its title and other properties in the Selection menu.

Alphanumeric WBS Numbering

The WBS hierarchy can contain letters as well as numbers. For example, a task with a WBS of 1.1.1 can be formatted to read 1.a.1, or A.1.1, or a.a.A, etc.

In the dialog that appears when a WBS SmartColumn is defined, levels 2, 3 and 4 are checked to indicate that letters should be used.

Example

In the example below, WBS levels 2, 3 and 4 display a capital letter.
