Task outline levels

Question:     

I would like to outline my schedule.  Where do I start?

 

Answer:

Set-up the column for outlining:

  1. Click

  2. Double-click the column heading for your task column.

  3. On the Column Formatting tab, bottom left-hand corner, type in a value (such as 0.3) for the field labeled Space Per Outline Level to Indent Column Text.

Set-up the Tab key as the indenting short-cut:

  1. Select Edit on the Tools tab.

  2. Turn on the option labeled Use the TAB key for outlining.

Outline your schedule:  

  1. Select the task or range of tasks to be indented (outlined).

  2. The toolbar will change to Current Object: Task Row.

  3. Press the Tab key or the green, right-pointing arrow in the toolbar:

 

Question:     

 How can I tell to which outline level my project tasks are set?

Answer

You can tell this at a glance by adding an outline level "SmartColumn".

 

  1. Use .

  2. Choose New Column on the Insert tab.

  3. From the list of column types, choose Outline Level.

 


Question:     

Can I revise a task and its milestones from a tier l to a tier ll by clicking on the milestone and making the change?

 

Answer

If what you describe is moving a task that is at outline level 1 to outline level 2 (or vice versa), then here is what you do.

 

  1. Click .

  2. Click once in the column area of the task row that you want to change.  The whole task row should now be highlighted in black.

  3. The toolbar will change to Current Object: Task Row.

  4. Press the Tab key or the green, right-pointing arrow in the toolbar:

 

 


Question:     

Now that my schedule is outlined, I would like to display summary bars.  How do I turn these on?

 

Answer

Summary bars can be displayed for any project steps that are level 2 or lower.  To turn on outlining:  

  1. On the Layout tab, in the Other section, choose Summary Bar Settings...

  2. Under When to Draw:

    • click Always Draw to display summary bars at all times

    • click Only When Rolled Up to display them only when the lower level tasks are rolled up

 

In this dialog box, you can also choose the symbols and connectors that show summary.
