Add tasks from Microsoft Project to an existing Milestones Professional schedule

Question:

I have a Milestones schedule which I imported from Microsoft Project.  Now, I would like to add several tasks to the schedule without re-importing.  What's the best way to do this?

Answer:

There are several ways to get this done:

Method 1:  Add individual milestone symbols to a row and link each one to a Microsoft Project task:

  1. Open the Microsoft Project schedule which has the new tasks.
  2. Open the Milestones Professional schedule (will be referred to as Schedule1.MLP)
  3. In Microsoft Project, select a task to be added.
  4. In Milestones, add a symbol to a task row in Schedule1.MLP.
  5. Right-click the new symbol.
  6. Choose Link to Active MS Project task...
  7. Select the date field to be linked.
  8. Make other selections, such as symbol text for this symbol.
  9. Choose Tag and Update.  The symbol date will be changed to reflect the date in Project.
  10. Repeat as needed for other Microsoft Project tasks to be linked.

Method 2:  Add a symbology set to a task row:

  1. Open the Microsoft Project schedule which has the new tasks.
  2. Open the Milestones Professional schedule (will be referred to as Schedule1.MLP)
  3. In Microsoft Project, select a task to be added.
  4. In Milestones, right click (in the column area) on the task row on which the new task will be added.
  5. Choose Link to Active MS Project task...
  6. If this Milestones task row has several Microsoft Project tasks, then   Tag task rows.
  7. Add Symbology.
  8. Choose Standard.
  9. In the list under Standard, make a selection.
  10. Make other selections, such as symbol text.  If the Milestones schedule includes tasks from multiple Microsoft Project schedules be sure to select the File nickname for multi-project refresh (at the top)
  11. Choose Tag.  The new symbology will be added to the task row if Add Symbology is checked.

Method 3:  Filter the Microsoft Project schedule.  Import the new tasks.  Merge with the existing schedule.

  1. In Microsoft Project, filter the schedule so that only new tasks are visible.
  2. In Milestones, choose Connections | Create Report from Project and proceed through the wizard to import the new tasks.
  3. Once the tasks have been imported, save the imported schedule.  (For this example, it will be called Schedule2.MLP.)
  4. Open the existing Milestones Professional schedule.  (The one on which the new tasks will be added.)
  5. Choose File | Open | Chart to Merge.
  6. Browse to and select Schedule2.MLP.  The new tasks are now at the bottom of the schedule.  Rearrange as needed.
