Horizontal gridlines separate the task rows. Shading provides background coloring for task rows. Gridlines and shading can be customized for distinct areas of the schedule: all columns on the left, all columns on the right, and the schedule area in between. Tutorial Lesson 1 - Format a schedule
Set default horizontal gridlines for the entire schedule:

Click Format | Gridlines | Horizontal Gridlines and Shading.

Click the Gridlines tab.

Show Gridlines in the areas of the chart which need gridlines: (Left Columns, Right Columns and/or the Graph/Schedule Area.)

Select the Line Type for each section.

Select the Line Color for each section.
Set default task row shading for the entire schedule:

Click Format | Gridlines | Horizontal Gridlines and Shading.

Click the Shading tab.

Shade the Task Row in the area of the chart which need shading: (Left Columns, Right Columns and/or the Graph/Schedule Area.)

Under Shade Color, click the Change button and choose a color.

Under Effects Target Color, click the Change button and chose a color that the color from Step 4 will fade into.

Under Special Effects, choose a fading type.

Under Alternating Pattern, choose to shade only Odd Lines or Even Lines.
Try a color theme for easy shading.

Choose the Gridlines tab or the Shading tab.

Show Gridlines for one or more of the 3 sections

Apply New Selections to all Three Sections:

Check if the left columns, schedule and right columns will all have the same shading and grid lines. Then, when one of the sections is changed, the other sections will change to the same new settings.

Reset Gridlines and Shades back to Schedule Defaults:

Check to clear all gridlines and shading in this dialog box.
|

Apply only to visible tasks:
|
|
Check if there are hidden task rows, as found in a filtered or rolled-up schedule. When using the Shift key to select contiguous task rows for formatting, non-visible task rows will also be formatted unless this option is checked.

Shade the Task Rows for one or more of the sections.
|
|

Choose Shade Color and Special Effects.
|

Choose a Fill pattern. |

Notes:

Reset Gridlines and Shades back to Schedule Defaults: Check to clear all gridlines and shading in this dialog box.

Apply New Selections to all Three Sections: Check if the left columns, schedule and right columns will all have the same shading and grid lines. Then, when one of the sections is changed the other sections will change to the same new settings.

Select Remove all task by task gridline and shading overrides to reset all individual overrides.
-
When shading odd or even rows only, Milestones takes hidden or rolled-up rows into account and maintains the proper alternating pattern.
