Symbol text

Symbol text is text which appears next to a symbol or the horizontal bar next to the symbol, as shown below. Symbol text remains attached to the symbol when the symbol is moved to another date or task row. Up to three lines of text may be entered for each symbol.

The Symbol Text SmartColumn displays, within the column cell, either the symbol text or symbol notes from a selected symbol type on all task rows.
Set the symbol text and symbol date positions
|
Symbol dates and symbol text can be positioned around or on the symbol. The examples below show the date positioning as "middle left," "below center," and "above center."

Set the default text and date position for a toolbox symbol:

In the toolbox, double-click the symbol to change.

In the Symbol Options dialog box, select the Text and Date Properties tab.

As changes are made, the Sample Symbol on top of the dialog box will reflect the selections.

Override text and date position for a symbol on the schedule:

Click (the toolbox Arrow tool.)

Click once on the symbol on the schedule. This will display the Selection menu. Choose the Text tab.

Under Date Placement, make selections.

Under Text Placement, make selections.

Click (the toolbox Arrow tool.)

Click once to highlight a symbol on the schedule.

To alter Date Placement, use ALT + Ctrl + Arrow Keys.

To alter Text Placement, use ALT + Arrow Keys.

Add text to a symbol

Click (the toolbox Arrow tool.)

Click once on the symbol in the schedule. This will display the Selection menu.

Enter text next to Text Line 1, 2, and/or 3.

Make selections for Text Placement and Date Placement to override an individual symbol's text and date placement.

Optionally, in the Font section, choose Bold, Italic and other settings.

Add text to a horizontal bar:
Text attached to a bar's left most symbol can be centered inside a bar.

Click (the toolbox Arrow tool.)

On the schedule, click once on the first symbol (left-most) in a symbol+bar+symbol combination. This will display the Selection menu.

Click the Text tab.

Enter text next to Text Line 1, 2, and/or 3.

Under Text Placement, choose Middle and Centered on Bar. Click the Apply Text Changes button.

In addition to three lines of symbol text, a formatted symbol note can also be displayed with each symbol.

Change individual symbol text lines' color and style:
|
Each symbol can have three rows of symbol text. Each of those text rows can be individually formatted, as an override to the default symbol text settings.

Click (the toolbox Arrow tool.)

Click once on the symbol on the schedule. This will display the Selection menu.

Click on the Text tab.

Click the Text Overrides button.
-
Set color and text attributes, including bold, italic, and underline.

Repeat as needed for other symbol text entries.

Set the background shading color for a symbol's text:

Each symbol can have three rows of symbol text. Each of those text rows can be individually formatted, as an override to the default symbol text settings.

In the toolbox, double-click the symbol to set that symbol's text background coloring.

Click the Text and Date Properties tab.

Optionally, choose a target color, special fading effects, border, and shadowing for the symbol text.

Fill area around text.
-
For Fill Color, click Change and select a color.

Angled symbol text
It's possible to display symbol text and/or symbol dates at an angle. This might be useful on a very crowded schedule.
Set the global angle.

Click the Tools tab.
-
In the Program Options section, pick Edit.

Under Angle for Angled Symbol Text, pick one of the available options.

Show text and or dates at an angle for an individual symbol on the schedule:

Click (the toolbox Arrow tool.)

Click once on an existing symbol on the schedule. This will display the Selection menu.

On the Text tab in the Text Placement section, Draw text at angle.

Date also to angle the symbol date.
Show text at an angle globally for all instances of a toolbox symbol:

Click (the toolbox Arrow tool.)

Double-click the symbol in the Toolbox.

On the Text and Date Properties tab, in the bottom right-hand corner, Draw text at angle.

Add a symbol text SmartColumn

Choose Insert | Rows, Columns | New Column | Symbol Text.

Under Choose symbol, select the symbol source as the first or last symbol on a task row and the type of symbol.

The "first" symbol has the earliest date on the task row.

The "last" symbol has the latest date on the task row.
-
Choose "any symbol" type on the task row, or a specific symbol type.

Under Choose text source, select the symbol field whose text should appear in the column.

Make changes under Column Heading and Column Formatting.

Example: Symbol Text SmartColumn
In this example, the symbol text of the first symbol in every task row is automatically displayed in the "Phase Name" column, which is a Symbol Text SmartColumn.

Hide all symbol text and/or symbol dates
Hide all dates and/or text which appear next to symbols. This feature overrides text and date position settings in the toolbox and for individual symbols already placed on the schedule.

Choose View | Other | Override Symbol Text and Date Display.

Under Dates, choose
Hide all symbol dates.

Under Text,
Hide all symbol text.

Use Toolbox and individual symbol date/text settings to revert to toolbox date and text settings and override settings for symbol on the schedule.
Hide dates or symbol text on summary levels
Adjust the proximity of symbol text to the symbols:

Choose Tools | Program Options | Edit.

Under the heading Adjust Horizontal Symbol Text Position, choose one of the options Closest, Closer, Normal, or Further.
Change the symbol text size
Change the size of all the symbol text on the schedule:
- Choose Format | Default Text | Symbol Text.
- Change the size, font, and font style of the symbol text.
Change the size of the symbol text for a single symbol on the schedule:
- First, select the symbol on the schedule.
- In the Text tab, change the size in the drop down scroll list.
- Click
Apply Text Changes.
Reset the size of a symbol's text to the default:
- First, select the symbol on the schedule. This will display the Selection menu.
- In the Text tab under the Font section, click
.
- Click
Apply Text Changes.
- OR -
- Click
(the toolbox Arrow tool.)
- Double-click the symbol on the schedule.
- Click the Size/Color/Summary tab.
Reset to Chart Default.
